ISSA-LA January 16, 2019 Lunch Meeting

January 16 @ 11:30 am - 1:45 pm

Topic: Inside a Career Cyber-Criminal Gang.
Symantec recently worked with the FBI to have a career cyber-criminal gang arrested. The gang had been operating online continuously for more than ten years, scamming hundreds of thousands of victims and earning millions of dollars in the process. The investigation provided extremely detailed and rare insights into how a professional cyber-crime gang functions. This talk examines what criminal activities the gang participated in, what roles the individual members played in the operation and what skills were needed by the members to ensure success.

Speaker: Liam O’Murchu, Director, Security Technology & Response group at Symantec
Liam O’Murchu is director with the Security Technology and Response group with Symantec. Over the past 15 years Liam has investigated and responded to many of the most sophisticated cyber attacks to ever emerge. These range from professional cyber-criminals targeting financial institutions, to government backed threats targeting critical infrastructure. His analysis of Stuxnet helped uncover its true objective, to disrupt uranium enrichment in Iran. The analysis outlined how sophisticated attacks on critical infrastructure are carried out in the modern era. The analysis also lead to a book, “Countdown to Zeroday” by Kim Zetter and the “Zerodays” feature film documentary by Academy award winner Alex Gibney, which was shortlisted for best documentary at the Academy Awards in 2017. Another documentary featuring O’Murchu “Weapons of Mass Disruption” is showing in the international spy museum in Washington DC. A frequent speaker on T.V., radio and in printed press, O’Murchu has been featured on CBS’s 60 minutes, PBS, NPR, BBC, and in The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, The Financial Times and many more. O’Murchu has continued to analyze threats from election hacking to financial heists to espionage and to represent that research to the public. He continues to work closely with law enforcement to identify and apprehend malware authors. In 2012 O’Murchu was awarded the ISSA’s President’s Award honoring exceptional contributions to the security community.
